Are You Over-Functioning?

Are-you-over-functioning

I function very well under pressure.
I work very well in situations where things go haywire.

I persevere even when things get tough.

All of the above sentences apply to me.

I perfected this skill in my childhood when I played the strong little girl for my family. My mother was an alcoholic and all of us, including my father, my sister, me, and of course my mom, was utterly overwhelmed with the situation.

But I learned to function like a Swiss clock even under the most adverse circumstances. And I did a great job when I look at my good grades at school and my degree as a lawyer.

But inwardly, this functioning had left its scars.

My body had to fiercely scream "STOP!" and create obvious symptoms (or facts) that even I couldn't ignore. That was when I realized that I hadn't been in touch with myself and my healthy needs for a long time.

I had to realize that I was over-functioning.

The recognition at work of how reliably I function in stressful situations suddenly felt stale. That was the beginning of the most exciting journey I have ever embarked on: The journey to myself.

On this journey, I gave myself one of the greatest gifts: I fulfilled my need to attract my beloved in 2013. One year later, I took the liberty of saying a cheerful goodbye to law and starting my own coaching business. Somewhere along the way, my troubled health has improved in miraculous ways.

As you know, I help strong women who also function very well (too well?) to find the love of their lives. When I say "the love of their lives," I mean it in a beautifully whole way: For me, it means to be with the right man, to live your purpose, to enjoy a healthy body, and to know that you can be, do, and have what you desire.

What about you?
Do you also function a little too well and often forget your own needs?

You have to understand that you cannot over-function, endure, and persevere, and at the same time create the life that deeply fulfills you.

When we over-function, we are separated from our healthy needs. When we persevere, we give challenging circumstances more importance than our needs. When we endure, we disregard the signals of our soul, often until our body stops us and unmistakably confronts us with facts (or symptoms) that we can no longer ignore.

Today, I have a question for you, which I ask myself regularly because it happens to me now and then that I fall into my old pattern and over-function like a Duracell bunny until my batteries are nearly empty:

Do you need to practice functioning well under pressure and persevering when things get tough - or can you do that excellently thanks to years of training?

This question is zapping me out of my "over-functioning, persevering, enduring" trance because it addresses a part of me that is of central importance to me: my personal development.

My personal development is right at the top of my priority list. That's why I don't even have to think about my answer to the question above: It's evident that I don't need to practice functioning well, enduring, or persevering. Thanks to years of practice, I can do that blindfolded.

Listening to my needs, paying attention to how I feel, knowing whether a situation is good for me or not, this is the area that I can definitely improve.

What can you practice a little more, divine sister?

Is it functioning, persevering, and enduring? Or can you become better at perceiving and living your own needs?

If you wish to correct the course of your life and take it on a splendid path of love in 2019, then I warmly invite you to my virtual Vision Board Party. It's my Christmas gift to you.

It will take place next Thursday, December 27, 2018, from 1 pm to 3 pm EST in my private Facebook Group.

We will create our Vision Board for 2019, which is a beautiful tool to help you realize your dreams.

I'll also show you how you can integrate your desire to better be in touch with your own needs into your Vision Board.

Here's how you can prepare for our Vision Board Party: Get a nice big carton (you can use the bottom of a cardboard box or buy a carton in a crafts store), a pair of scissors, paper glue, and a picture of yourself that you like. You can also start collecting some pictures from the internet or magazines that are a reflection of your heart's desires.

I hope to see you at the Vision Board Party!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Much love,

Rosemarie

Rosemarie,

What a wonderful gift you have given to me this Christmas... I did not know we share such a similar story. I too am overfunctioning as a survival mechanism for growing up in an alcoholic and heartbroken household. I too carried this into my schooling (straight A's) and of course into my work. In 2017 I received the "Outstanding Staff Award" in a work environment that rewarded overfunctioning, and later that year, I started having non-stop heart palpitations. They didn't go away for two weeks, with lots of medication. I took a leave of absence. When I went back to work, within 2 weeks they were back. Definitely a symptom I could not ignore!! I had to leave my job, and now I'm on the path to healing. I found myself in a temporary role at Lesley University, an institution that values relationship above all else, supervised by two women who are marvels at self-care. How amazing! The knots in my back that have existed for 10 years are loosening. I'm off my heart medication. I'm not turning to the glass of wine anymore. I'm turning to my kids and the peace I feel in my heart. My boyfriend broke up with me early this summer, and even that was GOOD. Thank you so much for sharing your story... Happy Christmas and Much Love, Lisa
